Summer is finally here! Flowers are being planted all around the island. Notice the hanging baskets around DeRivera Park. Thank you to organizer, Val Chornyak and all of her volunteers. Special thanks to the Frosty Bar for lending us a three of her employees on basket hanging day, for the lift donated by Mike McCabe and our very own driver Bob Hilt.
Our watering volunteers will be out daily in the Garden Club golf cart. Anyone willing to assist with this project whether it be once a week, or as a substitute, can call Rini Miller 440-476-2047. Our first Saturday meeting went well. Thank you Susan Hildebrandt for an informative talk on Chiggers and Chipmunks. Our next event will be a plant exchange at the Yacht Club Pavilion June 8. ‘Bring a plant/take a plant’, please have plant species indicated with sun/shade requirements. If you are in need of a container, extras will be on Susan Hildebrandt’s porch, 983 West Shore Blvd. Next meeting will be at the Yacht Club, June 22 at 4:30. We will be visited by Master Gardener, Cookie Krizmanich with the topic of ‘Fragrance in the Garden’. Learn about the sense of smell in the garden, the reason for fragrance in plants, the timing of scent and what plants to choose. Our Home/Garden Tour tickets went on sale as of June 1. Call Kathy Schrader for ticket sales and information (440-773-5413) Tour is scheduled for July 14. Breakfast will be served prior to the Tour. Also, you can visit our website for continuing information. Upcoming events: Luckey Road Lavender Farm visit in Pemberville, Ohio. July 6, 9:30 ferry. Growing, harvesting and drying lavender is the topic. Also, for a minimal fee you can harvest your own bouquet. Please check our website for updated and full information. We will be having two Saturday meetings this summer so the folks who are off island during the week will have an opportunity to take part.
1) Our annual flower baskets will be prepped and hung on May 17th and 18th in DeRivera Park. Anyone available to aide in this project can call Val Chornyak at (419) 285-4030 for help needed. 2) On Saturday, May 21st, at 9 a.m., at the Yacht Club, we will be presenting “ The Challenge of Chiggers and Chipmunks.” Discover the facts regarding these pests as well as techniques and products to rid them from our landscape, “The truth about chigger bites,” how to avoid them and relieve the itch. 3) We will be hosting a plant exchange on Wednesday, June 8th, at 4:30 p.m. (Yacht Club Pavilion). For each plant that you contribute, you can take another one home. Please attach a label with plant name, size, bloom color and sun or shade requirements. In June, there will be a couple of interesting activities. On Wednesday, June 8th, from 4:30 p.m. at the PIBYC Pavilion there will be a Plant Exchange, and on Wednesday, June 22nd, at 4:30 p.m. there will be a program about Fragrance Gardening at PIBYC. All members were emailed a new membership form for this season which can be paid by check (P.O. Box 815) or PayPal.
